Introduction

What are the Divya Desams?

A living tradition of temples, hymns, and remembrance across the sacred geography of the Sri Vaishnava Sampradaya.

The Divya Desams are the sacred temples and divine abodes of Sriman Narayana celebrated by the twelve Azhwars in their Tamil hymns. Their pasurams are preserved together in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the fourfold collection of four thousand devotional verses that occupies a central place in Sri Vaishnava worship, philosophy, temple culture, music, and poetry.

The traditional enumeration recognises 108 Divya Desams. One hundred and six of these may be approached within the earthly realm as pilgrimage sites, spread across the historic Chozha, Nadu, Thondai, Vada, Malai and Pandiya countries. The remaining two — Thirupparkadal and Thirupparamapadham — are venerated as divine realms and are not ordinarily visited as earthly destinations.

The Azhwars were twelve Tamil poet-saints whose lives were shaped by an overflowing love for Sriman Narayana. Traveling from temple to temple, they offered Mangala Sasanam — the sacred, auspicious utterance in which the devotee prays for the eternal well-being and glory of the Lord and His Divya Desam. Through this loving remembrance, the Azhwars established a devotional geography that continues to shape Sri Vaishnava worship today.

Their hymns describe Bhagavan and Thayar as they are enshrined in each Divya Desam, along with the sacred landscape, tank, vimanam and surrounding traditions. The Nalayira Divya Prabandham thus preserves not merely poetry, but a living vocabulary of Kainkaryam, Prapatti, and the intimate devotional experience the Azhwars entrusted to future generations.

Special Feature

The Navathirupathi Divya Desams

Nine sacred Divya Desams along the Thamirabarani river in the Tirunelveli region, traditionally grouped and venerated together as the Navathirupathi.

The Navathirupathi are nine of the eighteen Pandiya Nattu Thirupathigal, closely associated with the pasurams of Nammazhwar. Pilgrims traditionally visit these temples together as a single sacred circuit, offering worship in a prescribed devotional order.
